ABOUT:

"Sàpiens" is a Catalan magazine about historical dissemination.

This illustration was made for the "Lost Jobs" section, in which each month the magazine talks about a job that no longer exists. The title of the article was "Nomenclàtors: the art of having all names in your head" written by Anna-Priscila Magriñà.

In this case the article was about the "Nomenclàtors". During ancient Rome, they were specialized slaves whose duty was to remember the names and qualities of the person his master approached or of the people who approached him, especially during a political campaign. Thus, Nomenclàtors served as a reminder to their masters during the morning greetings of their clients, or during their trips to the forum.

For the illustration I made a classic Roman column with the Nomenclàtor at work, whispering to his master the name of a person. At their feet, an eternal list of names that must be memorized.
